FAQ E-Bikes

How does the bike work?

How does the electric bicycle work?

The Innergy system consists of 5 main components:

  • The BATTERY (A) - integrated in the luggage carrier.
  • The MOTOR (B) - placed in the hub of the front wheel.
  • The DISPLAY (C) - placed on your handlebars.
  • The SENSOR (D) - Near the rear bottom bracket of the bike.
  • The COMPUTER (E) - Integrated in the headlight.

The pressure on the pedals you supply is monitored by the sensor (D) and the signal is sent to the computer (E). Depending on what setting (Eco or Boost) you have on the display (C), the computer will calculate assistance required . Both signals are processed in the computer (E) and translated into high or low assistance by the motor (B). The energy that runs everything comes from the battery (A).

What is the scope for the various combinations of power settings?

By default, the 'Eco' programmed state gives a range of between 40-75 km, depending on your weight, fitness, terrain, weather conditions, and age of the battery. The 'Boost' mode gives stronger support. Cycling in the 'Boost' mode drains your battery faster. How fast this is, again depends on what the dealer programmed, and your weight, fitness, terrain, weather conditions, and age of the battery. You should get between 20 to 40 km. It is best to use 'Eco' setting on the flats and 'Boost' mode up the hills if you want maximum range.

Is the degree of assistance adjustable?

Certainly. The unique feature of this system is that your dealer can adjust both the 'Eco' and the 'Boost' mode to your wishes. Would you prefer more mileage out of your battery? Then the dealer increases 'Eco' parameters on the computer. If you prefer stronger support (for hillier areas for example), than the dealer can easily program the bike for this. This allows you to fully customise the power settings.

Does the bicycle cycle heavy if the battery runs out?

The bicycle does run slightly heavier than a equivalent geared bike. The bicycle is equipped with a brushless DC motor that has no noticeable resistance, however because the bicycle is heavier than normal it can be hard to cycle up hills without power. On flatter terrain, it should not be a problem to cycle home if you should run out of power.

How fast can I cycle?

That is up to you. Regulations in Europe state that the motor must decrease assistance over 22km/hr and be 0% over 25km/hr. This is a legal obligation. Because this bike is made in Holland, these standards apply to the Innergy. For most people, 25km/hr is quite fast cycling.

Is the Innergy bicycle heavy?

The battery and the motor create extra weight. The lightweight engine weighs 3.0 kg and the removable battery weighs 2.5 kg. A total of 5.5 kilograms is added to the weight of the "standard Gazelle bicycle." The Orange Innergy weighs 26.8 kilograms, light for a bike with this level of features.

Can my dealer maintain my electric bike?

Yes. We have selected select Gazelle dealers to handle Innergy sales and servicing. In addition, the dealer has special computer software to check the bike's electronics. Any warranty issues are passed onto the Service and Guarantee Department of Gazelle.

Where can parts for the bike be ordered?

Parts can be ordered through your Gazelle dealer. Because they have the necessary documentation, the dealer can quickly determine the parts required. Many parts come from The Netherlands and there may be a few weeks for your component to be supplied.

I noticed that most Gazelle bikes come with a built in wheel lock. What do I do if I lose a key?

Gazelle uses a quality Dutch brand called AXA for its locks. When engaged, this wheel lock stops the rear wheel spinning. Coupled with a conventional chain lock, this system provides maximum security for your Gazelle.

It is very important to write the key number down when you buy your Gazelle. For information on ordering new keys: Click here

Can I cycle in the rain with the bicycles?

Yes, the parts on the Innergy are water tight and function normally in the rain. The system is not resistant to immersion in liquid or treatment with a pressure hose. Never clean your bike with a pressure hose.

How often should the bike be serviced at the Gazelle dealer?

The frequency depends on the use. Read the manual for service tips and contact the Gazelle dealer for any questions.

How long will the battery last?

The battery has approximately 600 full (100%) discharges. Thereafter, the capacity starts to slowly decline. Partial discharges are counted as follows - if the battery is only 20% of capacity all the time, then the battery can have 3000 discharges.

How do I store the battery and charger?

Store in a dry place and away from humidity.

How long does it take charge the battery?

The full charge of an empty battery takes approximately 3.5 hours. You can also partly charge the battery if you don't have the time.

How strong is my battery?

The battery is 7 Ampere and has a voltage of 36 volts. This means that the battery has stored energy of 252 Wh at full charge. At a weight of only 2.5 kg this gives it a very high energy density (energy per kg battery weight) of 100.8 Wh / kg.

What should I do to the battery if I don't use it for a while?

If the battery is 2 weeks or longer unused, it will turn itself into "sleep" mode, so the battery cannot discharge and capacity is preserved. Sleep mode turns off when you place the battery back in the bike or when you charge it.

How do you charge the battery?

You are supplied with a wall socket power charger as well as a 12-Volt cord for the car. The charger is small and light which means you could take it with you and charge the battery at the restaurant, in your bedroom or in the car.

Is the battery protected against theft?

Yes, in 2 ways. The battery is in the frame with a separate key lock. The key is the same as the lock on the wheel. There is also a battery with a unique serial number. This serial number of the battery is stored digitally in the computer. If the number on the battery does not match the number on the computer, the bike will not operate electrically.

The frost outside affects the batteries range. Why is that?

At temperatures below -5 degrees Celsius, batteries lose some capacity. Unless the battery is fully discharged, this won't cause any problems.

Are spare batteries available?

Yes, through your Gazelle dealer. Sometimes it is handy to have more batteries for longer trips. Batteries must be registered to your bike through the Gazelle dealer.

Can I also use the battery from my partner's bike?

Yes you can if the dealer has reprogrammed the battery on the computer. If this has not happened, you will get error message "1.1" on your monitor. Contact your dealer for more information.

Will the lights work if the battery goes empty?

The battery always has some remaining energy behind. This energy is enough to power the lights for a few hours.

What is the law in Australia on E-Bikes?

Currently the Australian law defines a bicycle as " a two wheel vehicle that is either soleley human powered or is power - assisted by an engine having a power output not exceeding 0.2 kw" We recommend you check each states regulations for further information.

What is the warranty on the Innergy?

You can view Gazelle's general warranty in the FAQ page of this website under the "MENU" tab . In addition, the following warranty applies to the Innergy: In normal use and servicing, Gazelle grants a  2-Year warranty on the engine, the display, the pedal sensor and computer. Normal wear falls outside the warranty. The battery is guaranteed for 600 full loads.

EMC Approved in compliance with EN-15194/EPAC
